SURROUNDINGS LAS COLINAS DREAMS
Salt production on the Costa Blanca takes place in various places along the coast. The best known are the salt lakes of Santa Pola, Torrevieja and San Pedro del Pinitar.
On the road between Torrevieja and Alicante, you will drive between the salt lakes near Santa Pola. From the car you can only see a fraction of this almost 2,500 hectare nature reserve. Special about this area is the enormous number of flamingos that are sometimes present. There are several footpaths through the nature reserve.
Torrevieja is not only known for its great climate, beautiful promenade and beaches, but also for the salt lakes. The 2 salt lakes are the largest in Europe. One is pink and the other is green. Officially, it is not allowed to enter these lakes, but in the case of the pink lake, there are a number of places where you could. Real swimming is difficult there, but if you are in Torrevieja on holiday then it is certainly fun to go there and take some nice pictures. Make sure you wear water shoes, the salt crystals on the bottom are very sharp. Unfortunately, there are no toilets or showers to be found.
Today, the municipality is known for the large nature reserve Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro. Here you will find salt lakes, a hiking area with possibilities to spot many kinds of birds and the famous healing mud baths.
